HOW CAN WE DISTINGUISH TRUE GURUS FROM FALSE GURUS?

The answer from Ram Dass

The relation between a guru and a chela happens in the innermost heart.

If a guru doesn't feel safe to you in your innermost heart,

you should have no business with him.

My book of Maharajji stories, Miracle of Love, has been translated into Japanese,

and published by Pawanasuta Press.

Perhaps there will be some quotes by Maharajji which will be of help to you.

My prayers are with you.

Namaste!

The answer from Darshani

1

A true Guru will never exhibit his powers.

His or her powers may surface in the attempt to save a disciple's life,

cure an illness, or grant peace to someone in agony.

Such powers are used only to help the afflicted but NEVER as a 'display'.

2

A true Guru will never say, "I am God," except in the Vedantic context

which states that the "I AM" in every human being is GOD in that form.

3

A true Guru will never make you spiritually dependent upon him or her.

On the contrary, he will help you to become spiritually independent of him.

His entire thrust will be to show you thatwhatever he has become,

 you can also become!

Whatever stage he has reached, you can also reach it.

To transform you into what he is, is his sole purpose.

4

A true Guru will seldom if ever disclose his identity in previous lives.

5

A true Guru will honor and respect all other contemporary Gurus,

teachers of other traditions, and all Gurus who have lived before him.

He or she will never place himself or herself above other spiritual teachers.

6

A true Guru will discourage your interest in magic, in the occult,

And in astral phenomena except for rare cases

in which such interest can somehow be of spiritual benefit to you.
